Under the Tung Chung Line Extension project, a new Tung Chung East Station# will be constructed between the existing Sunny Bay and Tung Chung stations. To connect to the future new station, the Tung Chung Line mainline tracks need to be diverted to the north with the construction of an approximately 1.2-kilometre new railway section.

The major track diversion works mainly include:
• Construction of a new railway section
• Installation of overhead lines
• Modification of the existing signaling system
• Phased installation of four turnouts on both the Tung Chung- and Hong Kong-bound tracks

The turnout installation is particularly critical in the track diversion works. Turnouts are important track facilities that allow trains to enter the new railway section. This works needs to be carried out on the operating Tung Chung Line tracks, and includes the following procedures that must be carried out uninterrupted:
• Installation of track components
• Track position adjustment and connection
• Installation of a point machine
• Testing of the signaling system and the various tests before train service resumption

After multiple reviews and careful planning by the project team, it was confirmed that several consecutive hours are necessary for the works to be carried out safely and smoothly. As the “Golden Two Hours” window is insufficient, it is inevitable that non-traffic hours will need to be slightly extended, with a minor service adjustment to be made on the Tung Chung Line service.

The first critical turnout installation was successfully completed in the late night of 26 October 2024. According to the current plan, the remaining three turnouts will be installed over the next three years. The project team will carefully plan the works, and will announce the details in due course after setting the next installations date.
