Mural painting is not only a simple artistic creation, but also an important link to strengthen community cohesion. Located by Tung Chung Bay, Ma Wan Chung was first settled by people more than 1,000 years ago and gradually developed into a fishing village. It reserves the significant evidence and footprint of Tung Chung as a fishing port. In recent years, the village has been actively promoting community culture and art, hoping to retain its distinctive characteristics. To connect with residents and community stakeholders, the Tung Chung Line Extension project team invited primary school students in the district to join together with an artist to create murals with vibrant colours to beautify the Tung Chung Line Extension Information Centre in the village.


Students, the artist, and the TUE project team celebrate the completion of the community artwork at the Tung Chung Line Extension Information Centre.

Mr Yuen Wing-keung, the designer of the wall art creation, has been living in Ma Wan Chung Village for nearly 40 years. He was born and raised there and many of his artworks can be found in the village. “The creation concept of this wall art was inspired by Gustav Klimt, a well-known Austrian symbolist painter. The painting at the door front of the Tung Chung Line Extension Information Centre is actually a form of art to compress three-dimensional space into a two- dimensional picture, blending unique colours and shapes into garden scenes,” he explained. The beautiful wall art was first drawn by Mr Yuen with chalk before he collaborated with the students to complete the work with bright and colourful paints using their full imagination.

To encourage the new generation to take part in the activity, the TUE project team invited students from the Salvation Army Lam Butt Chung Memorial School in Tung Chung to collaborate in the wall art creation. The group of students filled the wall art with happiness and laughter and brought so much fun to the art creation. “The students participating in this activity are Primary 4 to 6 students, who have a genuine interest in drawing and art creation. The students were very excited to know the Corporation had organised this activity. They were all engaged wholeheartedly to craft with art creation. The activity also allowed the higher form students to understand the community thoroughly and helped more students in the school to learn about the future development of the community, “said Ms Lo, the teacher in-charge of the activity.


Under the guidance of local artist Mr Yuen, the Tung Chung Line Extension Information Centre was given a brand new look, bringing more vibrancy to the community.


The floor and wall outside the Tung Chung Line Extension Information Centre have been refurbished with a fresh look to continue to serve the local community and residents.

With the joyous splashes of colours, the first phase of the wall art outside the Information Centre was completed and a celebration was held on 4 November 2022 which was joined by Mr Chan Hei-chuen, Principal of the Salvation Army Lam Butt Chung Memorial School, Mr Neil Smith, General Manager – Lantau (Projects) and Ms Lesly Leung, Project Manager – Tung Chung Line Extension, and certificates of appreciation were presented to the little painters. “Our gratitude to the school, their teachers and lovely students, as well as the artist Mr Yuen for making this meaningful project possible. Ma Wan Chung Village is well known for its natural scenery. This floor art better integrates the Centre with the rest of the village, which reflects what have we set out to achieve for the Tung Chung Line Extension project to be a “community railway. We will continue our close involvement the community while building the new railway extension. This art project has been created collectively by the engineering team and community stakeholders, we hope it can bring more colour to the village as well as more opportunities for us to introduce the project’s benefits and features to the community. “said Mr Smith.



Mr Neil Smith, General Manager – Lantau (Projects) presented certificates of appreciation to Principal Mr Chan Hei-chuen and 14 students from the Salvation Army Lam Butt Chung Memorial School to thank them for their support, and to tell them about the TUE project.

Two new wall art paintings were added on both sides of the Information Centre’s gate on 3 January 2023 with the participation of five students from the Salvation Army Lam Butt Chung Memorial School. The new works creatively show the history and features of Ma Wan Chung as a fishing village. The artist also skilfully blended the past, present, and future of Tung Chung in the same canvas, and curated many “Easter eggs” about Tung Chung to immerse visitors in a journey of discovery and exploration about the history and culture of the area, which further enlivens the information centre with more colour and creativity.
