Tung Chung West Section Works
The future Tung Chung West Station# is being built near Yat Tung Estate. A 1.3km underground tunnel will be constructed to connect the existing Tung Chung Station with Tung Chung West Station. As the areas between Tung Chung and Tung Chung West stations are well developed, the construction team will use a tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the construction of the Tung Chung West section tunnel, a tunnelling method that has much less impact on the community on the ground.
#The station names are working titles only.
What is Tunnel Boring Machine?
The TBM is a large machine designed for safe and highly efficient tunnel construction. The TBM operates underground, reducing the need for surface excavation and minimising disruption to local communities and road traffic. The
TBM can carry out many works procedures simultaneously, including excavation, removal of rock and soil, and installation of the permanent tunnel lining, thus increasing efficiency and reducing construction time.
Features & benefits • Reduces excavation area and minimises impact on nearby communities and road traffic • Less noise and dust impact than traditional tunnelling methods • Installs tunnel lining in parallel to increase efficiency |
Noise enclosure at the Shaft Works Site for Tung Chung West Section Tunnel
To facilitate the construction of the Tung Chung West section tunnel, a shaft will be set up at the end of the existing Tung Chung Line tunnel, i.e. between the two phases of Tung Chung Crescent. A temporary noise enclosure will be erected before the start of the tunnel construction works to minimise the impact of the works on the nearby residents. The enclosure will also be beautified to blend in well with the surrounding environment.
Construction of the temporary noise enclosure will commence in Q1 2024. Noise mitigation measures will be implemented to minimise the works impacts. Shaft excavation will not commence until the noise enclosure has been erected. In addition, the contractor will construct slurry treatment facilities on the hillside along Shun Tung Road, the exterior of which will also be beautified to blend in well with the surrounding environment.
Arrangement and details of the temporary noise enclosure • Full noise enclosure (20m x 36m), about 15m high • The works area for the TBM assembly near the temporary noise enclosure will be covered by a noise cover at ground level, allowing the overall size of the temporary noise enclosure to be reduced compared to the original plan before scheme gazettal • As the size and footprint of the temporary noise enclosure is reduced, the time for construction of the enclosure will be shortened, and the area and volume of soil to be excavated will be reduced, which is more environmentally desirable • The noise enclosure and the noise cover will be beautified to blend in well with the surroundings |
Tung Chung East Section
Tung Chung East Section – Noise Barrier Works
Tung Chung East Station# is to be constructed between the existing Sunny Bay and Tung Chung stations. To connect the future Tung Chung East Station to the existing Tung Chung Line, a new railway section of approximately 1.2 km will be constructed and part of the existing Tung Chung Line track will be diverted. To facilitate the track works, the project team completed the removal of the noise barrier along the Hong Kong-bound track of the Tung Chung Line in December to make way for the construction of the new tracks, track diversion and new noise barrier along the new alignment.
As Tung Chung East Station is located next to the existing Tung Chung Line, certain works have to be carried out adjacent to the operating railway. To maintain the daily service of the Tung Chung Line, these works can only be scheduled during the very short non-traffic hours at night. Taking into account the necessary inspection work, the actual construction window is around 2-3 hours. Therefore, the project team must meticulously plan ahead to complete each night’s works as quickly as possible, while ensuring that adequate mitigation measures are in place to minimise the impact on local residents.
Foundation works for Tung Chung East Station
The site formation works for Tung Chung East Station have been substantially completed. The project team is now working in full swing on the foundation works for the station and the associated entrances and exits, which are expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2024. The contractor has set up monitoring points near the site to minimise the impact on the neighbourhood and ensure compliance with the relevant laws.
Diaphragm wall construction for Tung Chung West Station
At the Tung Chung West Station site adjacent to Yat Tung Estate, site formation works have been completed. Construction of the station’s underground diaphragm walls to form the station’s box structure started in October. These construction activities are being carried out in phases, with the section closest to Yat Tung Estate expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2024. During construction, certain activities may generate noise and minor vibrations. The contractor has implemented mitigation measures, such as installing acoustic barriers and materials to minimise noise. Monitoring points have been set up near the site and will remain in operation throughout the construction period to ensure that all activities comply with the relevant laws and to minimise the impact on the community.
